Finance Update w/ Saffron Olive |
|
This week in Magic finance was quiet. Discounting some random release week fluctuations from Foundations cards, the biggest gainers this week increased less than 50%, like Fighter Class (prerelease), which jumped 30% to just under $8 thanks to its synergy with Captain America, First Avenger (Marvel Captain America). While Fighter Class (prerelease) isn't the best equipment tutor for most Commander decks, in Captain America it shines thanks to the equip cost reduction that level two offers. So far there haven't been as many price spikes associated with the Marvel legends as you might expect, although this might be because of low supply of the commanders themselves. This will change eventually, as Maro promised this week that they will be reprinting the cards somewhere, but exactly when and where is anyone's guess at this point.
Meanwhile in Standard, Screaming Nemesis (prerelease) jumped 42% this week to over $22. The card was as low as $10 a couple of weeks ago, but has increasingly been adopted in red aggro decks in Standard, driving up the price of the mythic. The real question is whether Screaming Nemesis (prerelease) can make waves outside of Standard. It has shown up on the fringes of Pioneer in aggro and prowess decks, but so far hasn't become a staple. If this happens, the price could grow even more.
Finally, textless Burst Lightning is now up to $16 - up from $1 a few weeks ago - thanks to its reintroduction to Standard in Foundations. There's been a debate over whether Standard players will pay money to bling out their decks, and it seems to be that the answer is yes, at least some of them. This might become more prevalent thanks to the slower rotation schedule and now the never-rotating Foundation set which makes the economics of blinging out a Standard deck a bit more palatable. It will be interesting to see if this trend continues.
